Science gives us the how, religion tries to answer that trickier more nebulous question of why. This is why religions are so fancifully diverse and science is “literally” diverse. It often clashes with religion because of this when it attempts to find the “literal” in their cryptic texts. This is a big mistake. Religion functions differently than science because it has to.
THE YIN AND YANG OF IT
Religion has to ebb while science flows. The scientific community, and religious folks for that matter, need to stop taking religious texts so literally. They weren’t intended to be taken this way. Most of the stories in these books defy what is actual universally possible. Just like our comic books. A future civilization would not find our comic books and determine that we were web slinging adamantium claw sprouting super beings. They would determine that we were fascinated with sacrificial super beings who used their super powers to help the mere mortals. It’s the same story you find in the religious texts. You just have to look at them in a new way. Science doesn’t just help us understand the world around us, it also helps us to understand what the hell we were talking about way back when.
THE SCIENCE CROWD
if you put your “faith” in science to fix what ails you, you must first understand why we fall ill. Not how, you guys got that how thing all locked up. Once you know why it will significantly help your research.
Here’s where the religious folks come in. They are more than willing to tell you the why. However, their literal view of their religious texts is where they go wrong. Why would the universe’s structure defy the story of Genesis if it were intended to be taken literally? The various universal origin stories out there are the hintor why, science steps in to determine the how.
CAN’T WE ALL JUST GET ALONG?
You guys should be best of friends. Stop arguing over what to teach the kids. Don’t teach them just Christianity or just Judaism or just Islam or just evolution. In order for the “little ones” to get on in this world they need to know “everything.”
